Major giving has changed

How charities used to do it vs what works now

Old Way

New Way

Classic Model → The Funnel

x_circle_pink_512.png

Hierarchical, top-down model with presumed entry at the bottom

x_circle_pink_512.png

Assumes donors “graduate” upward into major giving over time

x_circle_pink_512.png

Focuses on funneling everyone through the same progression

x_circle_pink_512.png

Treats major donors as the end of a long cultivation process

Modern Model → The Field

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Omnidirectional, donors can enter from anywhere

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Major donors don’t need to start small, they can begin big and stay big

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Defines a flexible ecosystem you can weave and expand, not a rigid ladder

Designed for flow and readiness, not hierarchy and waiting

Designed for Canadian registered charities, works anywhere good fundraising does.

Strike-Day

QR Code WIN

"During the Canada Post strike end of last year,

I made a list of local private foundation directors and hand-delivered mail to their homes.

One of them scanned the printed QR code and

made a major gift by credit card

online that same day."

Takeaway → Precision-targeted hyperlocal direct mail

can convert immediately into online major gifts,

even during a mail strike.

Timing makes a difference

"50% of charities receive a majority of the annual donations in the last quarter of the year - from October through December."

Market Stall Major Donor

"While tabling at an artisan market, a casual initial in-person conversation became an invitation to connect on social media. The contact turned out to work with the social impact team of a corporate foundation.

That chance encounter became a lead for an annual

major gift and employee volunteer commitment."

Takeaway → Every public event is a potential

major donor lead-gen moment.

Ask early, honour consent, let donors choose the pace.

The Stand-Up Marathon

"While canvassing on a downtown campus street, I recognized a popular comedian and stopped him in his tracks with a quick pitch.

He agreed on the spot to do a fundraising dare for the campaign, and the next month raised over $25,000 by streaming a 24-hour standup marathon."

Takeaway → Spotting opportunity and asking quickly

can trigger outsized impact.

Eric Shinn,

Fundraising Expert

"It’s not about knowing the right people anymore—it’s about reaching values aligned new people. Even one yes can transform your fundraising results."

25 yrs of experience

The Hospital Door Knock

"Canvassing door-to-door for a hospital capital campaign, I cold knocked

on the home of a family tied to one of the construction firms working on the build.

I gave them the same pitch as anyone else—no special treatment. They followed up

with a significant gift and explicit thanks for approaching them

like people in the community, not prospects."

Takeaway → Authentic, equal-handed outreach builds

trust and inspires generosity.

“I've learned so much from Eric and my career in fundraising would not be where it is without his guidance as a Senior Manager. He's not only great at the art of fundraising, but has an extraordinary ability to build great connections with his teams and donors. He's an empathetic and caring soul who believes in changing the world for the better. He's also just a great guy to have around the workplace.”

Senior Fundraiser & Campaign Manager

◾️ Born in Toronto in the 80’s, I was raised by self-employed artists, activists and entrepreneurs. My first job was at age 1,  going door to door selling zucchinis from our family garden, which set the stage for my career in sales and fundraising.

◾️ In 10 years of Face-to-Face fundraising going door-to-door, in malls and with street teams I have personally raised $100,000 in One-Time gifts from 500 new donors, and $30,000 per month in new recurring donations from another 2,000 donors, each of whom I met in person and directly asked to donate. In a single year, my team of 2-dozen fundraisers signed up 3,300 new monthly donors in Victoria, BC— 1% of the city!

◾️ With a background in journalism and writing for publications like Toronto Star, Vice and SAD, I also have the knack for written communication and interviewing. This informs my approach to trauma-informed ethical storytelling, crafting compelling calls-to-action and cases for support that respect rather diminish those in need of support. I don’t think sales is a dirty word, and I know from experience that empathy and ethical persuasion is the key to connecting with donors to act on their values.

◾️ My writing and fundraising expertise extends to grant writing and administration, from budgeting to crafting compelling support cases. I have worked administering grants for Canada Council for the Arts, National Film Board of Canada and Heritage Canada, and regularly support artists and artist-run centres in their fundraising initiatives.

◾️ In 3 years as Fundraising Manager for Disability Alliance BC I have overseen establishment and migration of cloud-based donor and membership CRM, while doubling annual individual donations revenue employing multi-channel fundraising strategies.

◾️ Let's discuss how I can leverage my expert experience to enhance your nonprofit’s fundraising performance.

The Hidden Foundation Find

"I came across a newly incorporated family foundation on

the CRA site with no giving history. My cold outreach got a “we’ve already spent our money” reply. I sent back a simple thank-you and the next message was, “Actually, we found some.

That turned into a five-figure donation and, the following year, a three-year pledge at an even higher level."

Takeaway → Smart research and persistence can uncover

hidden funders who are mission-aligned

and grateful to be found.

The Prospecting Mindset

From Funnels to Fields

Move from slow, permission-gated prospecting to a respectful, high-reach discovery process. Disqualify quickly, focus where momentum builds, keep consent front and centre.

Old Way → The Funnel of Permission

x_circle_pink_512.png

Start with a small, “safe” list of known names

x_circle_pink_512.png

Ask carefully, only after “earning the right”

x_circle_pink_512.png

Burn hours researching who might say yes

x_circle_pink_512.png

Qualify slowly, one relationship at a time

Result: Fewer conversations, slower learning, missed major gifts.

New Way → The Field of Discovery

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Begin with the full map of potential donors

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Assume permission to ask, offer an opt-out

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Let data, responses, and patterns reveal true fit

new_way_check_circle_mint_512.png

Disqualify fast, focus where momentum builds

Result: More reach, faster signals, respectful conversations that surface ready major donors.

Free 30-minute Call—leave with a vetted major donor prospects list, ready to reach out.

Don’t wait for next year’s giving cycle—act before other fundraisers do.

"Almost half of nonprofits start their year-end fundraising marketing outreach in November, with another third launching in December."

Timing is everything

Most giving happens OCT to DEC

so line up new meetings and make respectful asks now

The Million-Dollar Multi-Touch

"A classic case showing what it often takes to land a new donor meeting from cold outreach involved following up with three phone calls, three emails, and a mailed letter over three months.

That steady rhythm led to a phone meeting, then an email invite to submit a funding request, then an invite to make a million-dollar in-person pitch."

Takeaway → Major gifts often take layered, multi-channel

touchpoints to unlock high-stakes in-person

solicitation opportunities.

The Two-Minute Lifetime Donor

"During a monthly campaign, a homeowner in a wealthy neighbourhood invited me in. My 20-second pitch about the urgent need for recurring gifts led to an immediate four-figure annual commitment, spread across monthly donations.

Three years later, he remembered me, confirmed he was still giving monthly, and pledged to match that same support to an adjacent charity."

Takeaway → A clear, concise ask can spark loyalty that lasts

for years and spreads across causes.
